Alexandra Bridge

Queenstown

Points Of Interest

The bridge is a short stroll into the town centre of Alexandra and includes a free car park.

The remnants of Alexandra Suspension Bridge over the mighty Clutha River are an impressive sight. Large masonry piers, towers and abutments from the original bridge that was constructed between 1879 and 1882, can still be seen today.

The old bridge was a significant engineering feat given the strength of the current, the river's width and the tools available at the time of construction. The height of the piers measures 29.48 metres while 6.8 metres lay beneath the water level.

A small reserve is located below the present bridge and marks the beginning of the Frenchman Point Track. From the reserve, visitors can gain the best viewing point to capture a photo of the old bridge piers.

Those looking for a scenic walk, can gain access to the start of the Alexandra - Clyde 150th Anniversary Track (also referred to as 'The River Track').
